PLV and Visual Merchandising:
Complementary Disciplines that Boost
Your Brand

PLV and visual merchandising are not separate concepts: they are two sides of the same in-store brand strategy. While PLV acts as the physical communication medium, visual merchandising defines how that material is arranged to create a coherent, attractive and conversion-focused shopping experience.

At Staff Global Group, we integrate both disciplines into one unified service. Our field teams do more than install and replenish PLV materials: they apply visual merchandising criteria to ensure every piece is in the right place, at the right angle, at the right time. We also bring in window dressing as an extension of brand communication beyond the store, turning the shop window into the shopper’s first point of impact.

We understand that consistency between the POS materials, the planogram, and the brand’s visual narrative is what distinguishes a mediocre activation from one that truly drives sales.

Types of PLV

Point-of-sale advertising comes in multiple formats depending on the communication objective, channel and available in-store space. As a specialist visual merchandising company, we design and produce each format according to impact, functionality and logistics efficiency criteria.

Compact countertop or shelf element designed to highlight specific products at the point of sale.

Free-standing floor structure that groups products in an organised, attractive way to maximise visibility.

Large central module that turns any in-store area into a distinctive branded space.

Very high-visibility position at the end of the shelf; ideal for launches, promotions and hero products.

Side piece that visually interrupts the shelf and directs shoppers’ attention towards your product.

Vertical or horizontal format for fast communication, versatile and easy to update for each campaign.

Tall vertical structure that acts as a brand marker within the sales floor or at the entrance.

Application of adhesive graphics to floors, windows, columns or shelves to activate areas quickly.

Point-of-sale lighting solutions: neon-effect LED signs that add a decorative touch with high visual impact, and backlit light boxes that enhance graphics or messages with uniform illumination, day and night. Ideal for shop windows, entrances, or permanent brand display areas.

High-impact free-standing display unit designed for placement at any in-store hot spot without relying on the main shelf.

PLV Materials

The choice of PLV material determines the visual impact, durability, production cost and environmental footprint of each item. At Staff Global Group, we work with the most versatile PLV materials on the market and advise each client on the optimal combination based on channel, budget and sustainability goals.

Cardboard

Lightweight, economical and 100% recyclable. Cardboard PLV is the most common solution for short-term promotional campaigns, product launches and large distribution volumes. We offer offset finishes, UV varnish and laminates that enhance brand perception without compromising sustainability.

Acrylic

A rigid, transparent material that delivers a premium finish and high durability. Ideal for shelf displays, price holders, jewellery, cosmetics and technology display units. It combines with direct printing or vinyl graphics for top-quality visual results.

MDF (Medium-density fibreboard)

Structural strength and finishing versatility. MDF can be used to build islands, totems and long-life FSUs, with lacquered, wood veneer or direct digital print finishes. A preferred option for perfumery, fashion and premium FMCG channels.

Foam board

Lightweight yet rigid, foam board is the perfect substrate for banners, flat displays, stoppers and campaign window-display pieces. Excellent cost-to-impact ratio for short-term activations.

Vinyl

High-resolution adhesive for floors, shop windows, columns and shelves. Available in standard, printed or cut formats. It can refresh a space visually in just a few hours and be removed without leaving residue on the original surface.

LED

Integrating LED lighting into display units, totems and gondola ends multiplies product visibility in low-light environments. A long-lasting, low-energy solution with a high attention return.

Sustainability and recycling: We prioritise responsibly sourced materials and end-of-campaign collection and recycling schemes.

Our PLV logistics service includes collecting materials from stores and ensuring appropriate environmental management, minimising the environmental impact of each activation.

Benefits of PLV: Impact, Differentiation, Personalisation and Optimisation

A well-executed point-of-sale advertising strategy is not just about aesthetics: it is a direct sales lever. These are the four key benefits PLV brings to your brand.

Impact

PLV captures attention at the most critical point in the purchase process: when the consumer is standing in front of the shelf and making a decision in seconds. A well-designed display unit, an illuminated gondola end or a strategically positioned totem creates a focal point that is impossible to ignore. Visual impact translates directly into higher conversion rates and impulse purchases.

Differentiation

In a saturated environment where brands compete for the same physical space, PLV is your voice inside the store. Standing out with exclusive POS material, a distinctive design structure or a well-executed floor vinyl places your product above the visual noise of the shelf. Visual merchandising turns your space into a memorable brand experience.

Personalisation

Every channel, point of sale and campaign has its own specific requirements. PLV allows full personalisation: format, material, graphics, message and promotional mechanic tailored to each client’s needs. Whether you need a countertop display for a pharmacy or a large-format island for a hypermarket, we produce exactly the solution your brand needs.

Optimisation

Good PLV does not end with installation: it is measured, evaluated and improved. We analyse each activation through geolocated photographic reports and in-store execution data. We optimise the lifecycle of each item, coordinate removal at the end of the campaign and feed learnings back into the design process.

How We Design Your PLV: Methodology, Strategy, Operations and Measurement

Our process as a PLV company is structured into four phases that ensure consistent, efficient execution aligned with your brand objectives.

Methodology

We begin with an analysis phase in which we define the PLV brief: distribution channel, type of point of sale, promotional mechanic, product format and sales objectives. From there, our design team develops creative and technical proposals that combine brand standards with the real requirements of the in-store space.

Strategy

Every PLV piece responds to a clear strategy. We define the most appropriate material (cardboard, acrylic, MDF, vinyl), the optimal location in-store, the main message and the activation mechanic. We incorporate visual merchandising and window-dressing criteria to ensure consistency between the PLV and the brand environment.

Operations

We coordinate PLV production, transport and installation through our network of field teams across Iberia. We manage last-mile distribution to each point of sale, on-site assembly and installation, product replenishment and removal of the materials at the end of the campaign. Everything under one traceable operating model.

Measurement

We generate photographic and data reports documenting execution at each point of sale. We monitor the condition of materials throughout the campaign and provide actionable information to optimise future activations. Measurement is part of the service, not an add-on.

SGG PLV Services

As a full-cycle PLV company, we manage every stage of the process so you only need to focus on the results.

Design

We develop the creative concept and engineering for every PLV piece: from the first sketch through to technical production drawings. We integrate your brand identity, channel requirements and space constraints to create a POS material solution that works in the real world.

Production

We produce in the most suitable materials for each campaign (cardboard, acrylic, MDF, foam board, vinyl or LED), with quality controls at every stage. We handle volumes ranging from short customised runs to large-scale national campaign production.

Installation

Set-up, supplier coordination and final preparation.

Nationwide distribution

We coordinate delivery of PLV materials from production warehouses to every point of sale, regardless of location. Full traceability, guaranteed lead times and coordination with retail chains. More information is available on our promotional logistics page.

Dismantling

At the end of each campaign, we manage the collection of PLV materials from every point of sale. This is critical for maintaining brand image, freeing up store space and meeting environmental commitments on recycling and responsible waste management.

Storage

We store and manage PLV stock between campaigns, with real-time inventory and order preparation for reactivations or phased distributions. Your PLV is always ready when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions
about PLV

What is PLV?

PLV is the Spanish acronym for point-of-sale advertising. It refers to all physical communication and display elements that a brand installs at the point of sale to attract consumer attention, provide information about a product or promotion and encourage purchase. It ranges from a simple countertop display to a large-format island, an LED-lit totem or an FSU (Free Standing Unit). PLV is one of the most effective trade marketing tools because it acts at the decisive moment: when the shopper is standing in front of the shelf.

PLV (the Spanish acronym for point-of-sale advertising) and POS (Point of Sale), or POS material, are often used as synonyms, although there are nuances. POS is the English-language term and includes all communication materials and supports present at the point of sale. In practice, when we refer to POS we mean the broader set of materials (posters, leaflets, stoppers, displays, totems), while PLV may be used specifically for three-dimensional or larger-format elements. At Staff Global Group, we use both terms interchangeably and manage the full lifecycle of both.

The useful life of PLV depends on the material and the objective of the activation. Cardboard PLV is designed for short campaigns lasting between 2 and 8 weeks, ideal for launches or seasonal promotions. Acrylic or MDF PLV can last for several months or even years, so it is used for permanent brand displays. Vinyl PLV has an intermediate lifespan depending on the substrate and footfall at the point of sale. In every case, we manage removal and replacement of the material at the end of each campaign.

Yes. Cardboard PLV is 100% recyclable and our default option for short-term campaigns. We work with sustainability-certified suppliers and offer collection and environmental management schemes for materials at the end of each campaign. For clients with specific sustainability commitments, we advise on the best recyclable or low-impact PLV material alternatives for each project.

The impact of PLV can be measured through several indicators: sales uplift during the activation period compared with the previous period or equivalent stores without PLV, shelf conversion rate, visibility measured through eye-tracking or surveys, and in-store execution data (percentage of stores where the PLV is correctly installed and in good condition). At Staff Global Group, we generate geolocated photographic reports and execution data that make it possible to assess PLV status in real time and take optimisation decisions during the campaign.

We work with brands and distributors across virtually every FMCG and retail sector: food and beverages, cosmetics and perfumery, pharmacy and para-pharmacy, technology and electronics, fashion and accessories, hardware and DIY, toys, sports and leisure. Our knowledge of each channel’s specific requirements allows us to adapt the PLV solution (type, material, format and operations) to the needs of each sector and retail chain.
